Jeremy Steig
Live in New York
For about five years, starting in 2003, Jeremy Steig played monthly at the Cornelia Street Cafe in the West Village (The Café closed in 2019). Known at the time as a hot spot for live jazz, it was less than a five-minute walk from Jeremy’s apartment, which was a block west of Washington Square.
The videos we present here were shot on his Handy Cam. The club was a long, narrow space, and the camera was placed in a “place you can put it” near the entrance across the seating area from the stage. As such, the voices of the audience seated around us are included, as well as shadows of the waiters walking between the seats. Because cassettes were still used back then, some videos have only a limited level of fidelity.
However, this site is the only place where you can watch live recordings of Jeremy in New York in the 21st-century, on another level as a veteran flutist. Please also enjoy the outstanding performances by the masterful band members.
More videos will be uploaded toward the 10th anniversary of Jeremy’s passing in 2026.
Remembering Jim McNeely

Many of the audience members were from Europe that night, and they were lucky to be there to listen to Jim McNeely play so beautifully, especially on “Prelude to Naima” (as announced by Jeremy) and a Strayhorn standard. It was also great to see him raise his fist in response to the cheering audience with a big smile on his face after the band’s exciting rendition of Samba de Orfeo. Thank you so much, Jim-san! We’ll never forget you. (This recording was made on tape. The video cam moves for several seconds with visual disturbance on 2nd set.)

Marking the 9th anniversary…
April is the month for remembering, and I am pleased to present this video from a really special performance in 2006. If you happened to hear it live that night, you were extremely lucky. This is a must-see for those who are hungry for live jazz at its finest.

Behind the Scenes
Jeremy began the sets solo on flute (1st) and on one of his bamboo flutes (2nd).
We had a big friendly crowd that night, and both Jeremy and Vic were talkative on stage.

Behind the Scenes
Jeremy wasn’t comfortable with the short stick supporting the bass flute in this video, so he had a longer one made. It was long enough to reach the floor, which made it easier to play live in a limited space.
