JEREMY’S GALLERY & CAFÉ
(September 2017 – September 2019)
An inspiring space to enjoy the exciting world of Jeremy Steig
JEREMY’S opened on Motomachi Craftsmanship Street in Yokohama on September 22, 2017, almost a year and a half after Jeremy had passed away. It was a limited-time gallery/cafe for sharing the drawings he had done in preparation for an art show, which unfortunately never materialized.
Under Jeremy’s photo hanging in the cafe, we placed a notebook for customers to write freely in. We received heartfelt messages from many guests such as the following. Thank you very much.
- I am very happy to spend time in a space filled with Jeremy, whom I have always admired. –R.F.
- I play the flute in the college jazz club, and Jeremy is my hero. This is a wonderful space where I could think about Jeremy’s music and life while looking at colorful paintings of Jeremy. –T.S.
- I have come here a few times since the summer. I hope to see him again somewhere. –S.
- I was very impressed when I saw Jeremy’s video! …I could feel the emotion on which his performances were based and it almost brought tears to my eyes. I wish I could have met him while he was alive. –K.K.
- I first heard Jeremy’s LP when I was 16. Then I started playing the flute. Almost 50 years have passed since then. Jeremy’s painting is as improvisational as his playing. This is a wonderful space. Thank you, Asako-san. –M.K.
- Thank you very much, Asako, for the interesting conversation we had today. It was full of surprises. I will visit again to see his paintings. –Y.T.
- …I enjoyed talking with my old friends about our fond memories of listening to Jeremy’s LPs when we were in college. I am grateful to the cafe and Asako for giving us this opportunity. –A.K.
- It was a total coincidence that I stopped by today. His paintings are wonderful. I wish I could have seen more of them. –H.H.
- Surrounded by Jeremy’s paintings, I was able to spend a relaxing time. I also enjoyed a nice cup of coffee. –E.H.
- I‘m glad I could make it on the last day! The coffee and the home-made ice cream were delicious. It was good to see Jeremy’s last painting…I could only come a few times in two years, but I had a lot of fun. –S.A.
Musicians gave enthusiastic performances at the free-throwing jazz flute concerts held occasionally on Saturday afternoon. With its undressed concrete interior, the café had excellent acoustics, and the audience was able to enjoy the live sound without a microphone. Thanks to the great turnout, there was even a waiting list.
We also held events such as a screening of a video of Jeremy in everyday life, and a reading of the liner notes of Flute Fever (1963): a ground-breaking recording that defied the common perception of the flute.
Click to watch a concert at the café following a walk from Harbor View Park.
After the café had closed, we continued to interact with people overseas via social network.
